3D Printing

Homewood Library card holders can now submit 3D print requests to be printed on the library's new 3D printer, a LulzBot TAZ 5. The TAZ takes 3D designs you create or download from the Internet and makes a 3-dimensional object in plastic.

Adding the TAZ to our services supports the library's strategic initiatives of fostering life-long learning and enriching lives through technology. The library is excited to offer you this unique opportunity to try new technology, to further your creativity, and to make your designs.

Printing Policy and Requirements

  • All print jobs submitted must comply with the Library's 3D Printing Policy.
  • The charge is $.10 cents per gram plus $1 service fee for each item. An email notification will be sent when your item is ready for pick-up.  Your payment may be made and your item may be picked-up at the front desk.  
  • Your print job must be picked up before submitting another print request.
  • Your file must be submitted in .STL format.  Some files may not be able to be converted to print.
  • Your finished printed object must be smaller than 11 in x 10 in x 9 in (298mm x 275mm x 250mm)
  • Due to the popularity of the printer we can only print items that require less than 10 hours printing time.
  • Printing is available on a first come, first-served basis and is done by library staff. Priority printing is given to library programs and events.

Getting Started with 3D Printing

  • Search or browse for objects ready to print or customize. You can go to Thingiverse or My Mini Factory or one of these other sites for free designs.
  • Design your own 3D object using 3D modeling software.  Tinkercad is a simple 3D design application which is great for all ages and does not require any downloading. You can find additional 3D software here.

What is 3D Printing?

3D printing is a process of making a three-dimensional solid object of virtually any shape from a digital model. 3D printing is achieved using an additive process, where successive layers of material are laid down in different shapes. An object is literally built layer upon layer.

How is it used?

3D printing is used in a variety of fields, from hobbyists with desktop printers to corporations using commercial printers to create prototypes of new products and customized items.  3D printing of food and organs are currently under development.

How does it work? 

The LulzBot TAZ 5 makes solid, three-dimensional objects out of melted PLA (polylactic acid) and Ninjaflex (thermoplastic elastomer) filament. Your 3D design files are translated into instructions for the TAZ 5 printer. The printer heats the PLA/Ninjaflex filament and squeezes it out through a nozzle onto a heated build plate to make a solid object layer by layer. This method is called Fused Filament Fabrication.

How much does it cost?

The charge is $.10 cents per gram plus $1 service fee for each item.

What can I print?

Anything except offensive material or weapons. We review every file before printing to ensure compliance with our 3D Printing Policy and printing capability.

The maximum build size is 11 in length x 10 in width x 9 in height.

We have a variety of colors in both PLA and NINJAFLEX filament. Make your color choice on the form for your project.
